When these homeowners decided to transform the outdated layout of their new house, we all had our work cut out for us. The entrance to the kitchen was tucked into the back of the first floor, completely isolating it from the rest of the space. On the second floor, we faced the challenge of awkwardly-shaped rooms, one of which occupied all of the windows that ran along the (back) northern wall of the house.
To better integrate the kitchen into the entire first floor, we opened the wall between the kitchen and dining area, creating a spacious great room, with great flow. Upstairs, we reshaped the bedrooms so they could share exposure from the northern windows, and siphoned a few feet from one of the bedrooms to add to the front room closet, creating a space for a master en suite bathroom.
