History

Paul Schulman's passion for design stems from his life-long interest and education in the fine arts. With a Master of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Metalsmithing, Schulman approaches all projects with an eye toward history, architecture and fine design.

Since 1999, a growing stable of the area's top interior designers and private clients have relied on Schulman's talent and innovative designs. Schulman has worked with Nate Berkus, Booth Hansen, Shelly Handman and Lisa Abeln.

Schulman received his bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1989. It was there that he found his calling after assisting a professor with the construction of his house and becoming interested in the balance between construction and fine art. Upon graduation, Schulman received the prestigious Milliken Award for exceptional achievement in the arts.

Schulman began his graduate studies in 1991 at the University of Washington, Seattle. He later transferred to the University of Wisconsin in Madison and moved from metalsmithing to sculpture. His master's thesis show in 1994 was an installation in a 5,000 square foot loft space in Milwaukee that earned reviews in both The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and The New Art Examiner. Soon after he relocated to Milwaukee, Schulman was invited to participate in the "Gen X: 30 under 30" art show at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Professionally, Schulman started a decorative painting company that eventually became a home design store, Unforgettable Furniture and Objects (UFO). UFO was located in a 1901 brick garage that Schulman converted into a showroom featuring home accessories, architectural artifacts, modern antiques and Schulman's own custom furniture pieces. As others took notice of his talent and craftsmanship, Schulman developed a line of furniture that was introduced at the Chicago Design Show at the Merchandise Mart in 1998. This collection met with great success and was recognized in Metropolitan Home, House Beautiful, Echoes and Intramuros, a French design magazine.

In 1999, Schulman moved to Chicago and established Paul Schulman Design. Today, PSD is a full service custom design firm that creates a wide variety of commercial and residential pieces – everything from conference tables, built-in bookcases and entertainment units to home offices, television lifts and even indoor water fountains.
